Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese medical practice that astounds most Westerners. It remains quite popular in China, Vietnam, Indonesia and Southeast Asia. In fact the principle of Gua Sha is similar to that of acupuncture, in that it deal with the meridians of the body and stimulating various points in the body along those meridians. It is said that Gua Sha can provide drug-free relief from back, neck, leg and shoulder pain. In fact, it is used to treat and prevent acute conditions such as the common cold, flu, asthma, and bronchitis. Gua Sha is applied primarily to the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks and limbs of the body. However Gua Sha should NEVER be applied over moles, cuts or other unhealed areas.

Gua Sha is applied to LUBRICATED skin using a smooth edged Gua Sha tool, such as jade, bone or horn. The tool should be held at a 30 degree angle to the skin, with the smooth edge touching the skin. Rub in downward strokes, using moderate pressure. The patient should not feel pain, though it might feel slightly uncomfortable. Stroke down from the neck and out the arms. On the back, strokes should be made away, and down , from the spine and pelvis, then down the legs. This will raise a reddish rash, called petechiae, that fades in two to four days. Only one area should be done at a time, and as soon as the petechiae raise, move on to the next area. It is said that the patient will feel an immeidate shift in their condition, particularly in their level of pain. Gua Shau is said to move fluids along in the body, which carry metabolic wastes, thus improving circulation and normalizing metabolic processes. There are many books available , as well as websites, such as www.guasha.com, which better explain this ancient practice.
